MOSCOW — Russian air defenses downed a drone approaching the capital on Wednesday afternoon, Moscow’s mayor said on his Telegram channel, as both Russia and Ukraine reported stepped-up attacks and counterstrikes across multiple regions.
Authorities offered no immediate details on the origin of the drone downed Wednesday or whether it was connected to the larger wave of reported attacks.
The drone intercept near Moscow came a day after Russia’s defense ministry said its air defense systems had “intercepted and destroyed 121 Ukrainian drones overnight.”
In Ukraine, officials reported new Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. Speaking to Ukrainian television, Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk said Russian drones hit the gas transport system in the southern Odesa region on Wednesday.
“In the past 24 hours alone, we have seen the enemy carry out targeted strikes, particularly in the Odesa region, including on the gas transport system and gas transport system’s facilities,” Kolisnyk said.
Russian military leaders also claimed progress along the front line. Russia’s top general, Valery Gerasimov, said Tuesday that Russian forces were advancing “along the entire front” and had seized more than 30% of the buildings in the eastern Ukrainian town of Myrnohrad.
