WASHINGTON — The United States has sharply criticized Rwanda for breaching the recent peace agreement in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday. Rubio emphasized on X that Rwanda’s actions clearly violate the Washington Accords signed under former President Donald Trump, and Washington will act to ensure commitments are honored.

At the United Nations on Friday, U.S. officials accused Rwanda of exacerbating conflict in eastern DRC as a Rwanda-backed advance by the M23 rebel group raises concerns over the fragile peace process. Despite the December 4 signing of a peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda, fighting persists in the war-torn region, threatening U.S.-led diplomatic efforts.
