KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Wednesday that China is taking steps to deepen cooperation with Russia, citing a report from the head of Kyiv’s foreign intelligence service.
“We note that China is taking steps to intensify cooperation with Russia, including in the military-industrial sector,” Zelenskiy wrote on X, adding that partner intelligence services had similar information.
The announcement comes amid escalating tensions and attacks on energy infrastructure. In Ukraine, Russian drones struck the gas transport system in the southern Odesa region, a senior Ukrainian official said. The area contains pipelines that carry U.S. liquefied natural gas from Greece to Ukraine.
“In the past 24 hours alone, we have seen the enemy carry out targeted strikes, particularly in the Odesa region, including on the gas transport system and its facilities,” Mykola Kolisnyk, Ukraine’s deputy energy minister, told Ukrainian TV. He did not provide specific details on the targets.
Russia has sharply increased the number and intensity of attacks on Ukrainian gas and energy infrastructure in recent months, targeting both production and transmission systems.
Meanwhile, Moscow reported that Russian air defenses intercepted a drone heading toward the Russian capital on Wednesday afternoon, according to the city’s mayor on Telegram.
